About Trophy Boys

See this thorny and hilarious satire hot off of its Australian premiere. Trophy Boys plays at MCC's Susan & Ronald Frankel Theater in its American debut directed by Tony Award winner Danya Taymor (The Outsiders). Emmanuelle Mattana’s uproarious comedy closes out MCC’s 2024/25 season; see it starting this June for a limited run only.

Trophy Boys in New York follows an elite boys’ prep school debate team. The debaters’ prompt? “Feminism has failed women.” See how the boys untie that knot in a new play with riveting insights, dark humor, and plenty of laughs. Trophy Boys off Broadway promises a fierce debate like no other, plus unearthed secrets and an uncompromising look into young men’s psyche. See the show the Sydney Morning Herald said is “an exemplary instance of how art can advance and improve public debate.”

More information about Trophy Boys

Danya Taymor has established herself as a leading director of new plays that center dynamic young characters. In The Outsiders, she spotlights the lives of rough and tumble youth, in John Proctor is the Villain, she takes audiences into a high school classroom as its students debate the merits of The Crucible, and in her name-making production, Heroes of the Fourth Turning, recent graduate Republicans argued about their role in a post-Trump America.

Now, in Emmanuelle Mattana’s sparkling and bracing new play, Taymor again directs young actors, this time young men on a high school debate team discussing whether feminism has been good or bad for women. Razor sharp in its comedy and contemporary in its themes, the play offers audiences a startling picture of young men’s thinking habits today.

Along the way, a rumor leaks about the team that threatens to blow up everything its members have worked for. This satire soon turns into a deep exploration of power and privilege.

What to watch for

  • The Sydney Morning Herald said the play is ”as impressive (and funny) a debut as I’ve seen in 20 years as a theatre critic, and the debate it covers couldn’t be more relevant or urgent.”
  • The playwright, Emmanuelle Mattana, was on a debate team in high school, which largely inspired the world of the play.
  • Danya Taymor is one of just six women, including her aunt Julie Taymor (The Lion King), to win the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical.
  • MCC has had a starry year after its extended production of Shit. Meet. Fan. with Debra Messing, Neil Patrick Harris, and more A-listers.
